Why is earth a good conductor. Why do we need only 3 lines of electricity and leave the neautral for earth to conduct. As far as its known, earth is mostly rock and rock are not good conductors. Even though we find water inside, but water is not all over the earths crust.

Thanks for the time.

  1. At your house, the "earth" ground consists of a copper rod driven into the ground by about 6 feet, or is attached to metal water pipes that go under your lawn out to the street.  If it was just a wire touching bare rock, you are correct it would not be a good ground.

But, underground, damp soil is a decent conductor.  And mainly it is the massive size.  A giant sphere of even a poor conductor makes a very large capacitor, such that even a large total charge results in a very small potential.
