Tim Boal and Alain Riou emerge triumphant in Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The round of 96 (Round 1) of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011 continued with the 14th and 15th heat at the Ribera D’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Portugal, on Tuesday, June 14th.
France’s Tim Boal remained the most prominent surfer in the 14th heat and eventually surfed to victory, securing a place for himself in round two of the event. Brazil’s Jesse Mendes also joined him in the next round by finishing as a runner-up.
France’s Mikael Picon and Brazil’s Charlie brown were unable to stay at par with the performances of their rivals and ended up getting ousted from the event title race after rounding out the third and fourth positions respectively.
The 15th heat of Round 1 was won by French Polynesia’s Alain Riou, while Brazil’s Caio Ibelli finished in second place. Both the surfers advanced to the next stage of the competition as a result. Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and Australia Josh Kerr
finished in the bottom two and consequently got eliminated from the event.
The 14th heat featured a decent performance from France’s Boal as he locked a couple of good waves to seal the fate of the contest. His first good wave came early in the heat, getting him 5.37 points to move him into the lead. Almost half-way
through the heat, he added an impressive score of 7.00 to his account to finish with a two-wave total of 12.37 points. The score turned out to be more the sufficient to carry him off to victory.
Mendes grabbed the second position after getting 5.03 and 6.60 points off his two waves. While his effort was not good enough to get him past Boal, it was enough to extend his life in the competition by qualifying him for the next round.
Picon rounded out the third position after getting 9.86 points off his two waves, while Brown finished last with an overall score of 8.97 points. Their disappointing performances forced them out of the race for the event title in the very first round.
Riou gave a really impressive performance in the 15th heat of round of 96, clearly undaunted by the difficult surfing conditions that prevailed at the main event site. Scoring 6.00 off his first wave and 7.77 off his second, he ended the heat
with a heat-total of 13.77 points. The score remained unbeatable and eventually allowed him to walk away a winner.
Ibelli started things off impressively, earning a 7.27 off his first wave early in the heat, but was unable to follow it up with an equally impressive score, only managing to get a 4.93-point wave instead. However, the end result was quite satisfactory for
him as he managed to stay alive in the event.
Dantas finished in third place after earning 11,74 points off his two waves, while Kerr, a promising Australian, was unable to get his total score higher than 11.60 points.
