Tim Clark appointed as the assistant to Greg Norman in the President Cup
Tim Clark was appointed as the assistant captain for The Presidents Cup International Team on Tuesday. The South African was appointed by Greg Norman, who is the striker for the International Team.
The President Cup is a biannual event, which will take place from November 15 to 20, 2011 at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
While making an announcement on Tuesday, Norman said, “Tim brings a lot of Presidents Cup experience to the position, having been a member of three previous International Teams, including the one I captained in 2009, where he was an inspiration to all his
fellow team members for his performance and incredible team spirit, which is so vital in seeking a victory.”
Clark wanted to compete in the event, but since his pending surgery did not allow him to exert much on the course, the South African opted out of the event as a player. But since he has had a rich experience in the President Cup, Norman discussed the possibilities
of him assisting him in the tournament. Clarke agreed to the idea and hence, was finalized for a very crucial position.
Clark played his debut President Cup in 2003 after being selected as the Captain's Pick by International Team striker Gary Player. He contributed a score of 15 in three events, with five in the first one, followed by two and an eight.
Commenting on Norman’s decision of selecting him as the vice-captain Clarke said, “If I can't swing the club myself to help the International Team achieve a victory, I'll certainly do all I can in the team room to help the rest of my fellow players.”
With Clark’s addition to the staff members, Norman now has two assistants. This is the very first time that this change has been implemented, although it was announced in March 2010, when the two captains were appointed for the teams.
However, how beneficial will Clark prove to be for Norman is a question only time will have an answer to.
