The PGA Tour Commissioner, Tim Finchem has announced an 11-tournament series named “PGA Tour Latinoamerica”, to be staged in seven countries in Latin America.
The countries include Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, Brazil and Argentina.
According to the announced schedule, the tour will start of with the Mundo Maya Open at the Yucatan Country Club in Merida, Mexico, on September 3, 2012.
The series will conclude in Argentina where the final event, Argentine Open, will be played in Buenos Aires from December 10 to 16, 2012.
"The PGA Tour recognized the potential in the region and took the lead on collaborating with the leading national golf federations, promoters, golf clubs and the Tour de las Americas to create this new Tour," Finchem said. "We see this as an opportunity
to help in the further development of elite players across the region”.
"The timing is right, with South America hosting its first ever Olympic Games (2016 in Rio de Janeiro), which includes golf’s return to medal competition for the first time in more than 100 years,” he added.
Finchem also admitted that several players have emerged from Latin America and made huge contributions to the game of golf.
Therefore, the Tour aims to develop more top-notch players from the region to serve the game in future.
In March 2012, the PGA Tour announced the end to the qualification policy to the PGA Tour through qualifying schools.
Therefore, the players now need to perform on the Nationwide Tour in order to earn their cards for the PGA Tour.
Finchem believes that the PGA Tour Latinoamerica would provide a chance to the pros looking forward to get to the next level of the PGA Tour.
A total of forty three players have already qualified for the new series of tournaments and they will have a chance to improve the quality of their game by contending against senior players on the Tour.
Finchem is continuously working on expanding the Tour in different continents across the globe, and the steps he has taken are being appreciated by many in the world of golf.
