Tim Goss: McLaren’s performance will be affected if FIA introduces new rules on blown diffusers
According to McLaren’s engineering director Tim Goss, the team’s respective car MP4-26’s performance is going to be affected if the International Automobile Federation (FIA) introduces some new regulations regarding the exhaust system of the blown diffusers.
The new regulations are going to include a ban on engine modes which are used to maintain the flow of gases through the exhaust of the car even when the throttle is not being used.
Initially, it was announced that these changes will be implemented starting from the Spanish Grand Prix but since the teams applied for a stay, it seems that this change is now going to be made after the teams and the FIA come up with a specific deadline.
It is expected that the deadline is probably going to be decided after the Spanish Grand Prix.
However, McLaren’s engineering director believes that this rule change is going to affect his team’s performance to some extent.
“It's difficult to know. I think all of the major teams are up to the same tricks with regards to engine mapping. Certainly we exploit them. If the latest guidelines that the FIA have given us on use of engine to drive exhaust systems came in then it would
be a performance setback to us,” Goss told the media.
He believes that even though this change is going to affect almost all of the top running teams drastically, it is impossible to give a verdict that the current comparative pace is going to change as a result as well.
“We're just working to the latest set of guidelines from the FIA - I think we can react to whatever they tell us reasonably promptly - and for the moment it would appear that the FIA have decided that it's quite a complex matter and that they need more time
to consider how they will try and police it,” he added.
The Spanish Grand Prix is going to be very important for the top running teams and it is going to be interesting to see what the FIA decides after this weekend.
