Tim Ice trained Competent and Mike Tomlinson’s under charge, Timely Pursuit to compete in the allowance on 9th February at Oaklawn Park
The four-year-old Kentucky bred colt of Medaglia d’Oro out of Personal Girl, Competent is owned by James Mclngvale and is under training of Tim Ice. He is to race in an allowance race on 9th February at Oaklawn Park, over 1 1/16 miles, in a field
of eight contenders.
Competent will be ridden by Terry Thompson on 9th February.
The trainer is proud to have a colt that comes from such a rich pedigree, with both the sire and the dam being winners of numerous graded stakes' races.
“How many times do you get a chance to get a Medaglia d’Oro for $25,000?” he said.
Competent has raced thirteen times throughout his career and has won once while finishing second and third twice.
The highlights of Competent’s racing career have been maiden claiming and allowance races.
On 4th February, he went breezing for four furlongs that he covered in 50.60 seconds at Oaklawn Park.
He began his new season by coming third in a conditioned claimer on 19th January at Oaklawn Park, earning $25,000. The race was won by Timely Pursuit and the runner up was Lake Creek.
Competent will be giving a shot to the first level allowance rank after having finished third recently. The race will see Competent racing yet again with Timely Pursuit.
“The couple of races that he ran over there at Remington, when he stretched out, were very competitive,” Ice said.
The trainer added:
“He ran second one time to En Passant, and he came back and won for open $25,000 the next start. He’s run some pretty solid races, that horse. But it just looked like this was a horse that could fit in a couple of different spots. We’ll find out.”
Despite the fact that the winner of the last race, Timely Pursuit is part of the lineup, Competent is being viewed as one of the toughest contenders on the field of eight.
Trained by Mike Tomlinson, Timely Pursuit will get paired up with Channing Hill once again.
Both the horses are in for their second starts of the new season and whether Timely Pursuit will post a straight second victory or Competent will buck up from his last held third position, will be on the charts soon.
