Tim Lincecum shines as San Francisco Giants defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 - MLB Update
San Francisco Giants’ starter, Tim Lincecum had a tremendous day with the ball as he gifted just one earned run in his seven innings pitched with an ERA of 2.69 and gave the Giants a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at AT&T Park, San Francisco on August
7.
The batters were unsteady in the first two innings of the game as they failed to hit the scoring shots. Phillies’ short-stop Jimmy Rollins had a walk in the first inning but at the left-field, Chase Utley flied out as Rollins grounded out. Same is the case
with the Giants as Jeff Keppinger hit a single-run shot towards centre-field but Andres Torres flied out and at second base, Keppinger grounded out.
During the second inning, Pablo Sandoval drove a single-run shot towards left-field but at short-stop position, Chris Stewart popped out and Orlando Cabrera grounded out. Phillies got off the mark during the third inning with a single run and got a 1-0 lead
when Utley singled off right-centre and Roy Oswalt posted one run.
On the other side, the Giants added their initial run at the bottom of the fourth inning to level the game 1-all. Stewart hit a single-run shot towards centre-field as Sandoval contributed one run, Aubrey Huff moved to third base and Nate Schierholtz occupied
second base to end the fourth inning.
Lincecum surrendered seven hits, one run and one walk but had five strike-outs on his 114 pitches. “With the funk we've been in, you hope this is something to build on. We don't want to be content just winning one here and there.”
Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy commented on Lincecum and said, “He gave us what we needed.”
San Francisco took a 2-1 lead during the fifth inning when Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Carlos Beltran scored a single run. Sandoval moved to third base at the bottom of the fifth inning. Keppinger hit a sacrifice fly off right-field and
Stewart posted the last run for the Giants to give them a 3-1 lead at the end of sixth inning.
The last three innings were empty and the Giants remained on top until the end. Despite a hard-fought win, the Giants lost the four-game series 3-1 against the Phillies but avoided a clean sweep at their home-ground.
