Tim Lincecum struggles as Colorado Rockies defeat San Francisco Giants 7-4 - Part 1
In the first match of the two game series between the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants, it was the Rockies who came out victorious 7-4 at Coors Field in Denver on Monday, May16.
The Giants’ pitcher par excellence Tim Lincecum wasn’t himself while on the field as his target while pitching was off base and seemed almost careless. There was no where that Lincecum’s aim would be sharp. Not at the home plate and not anywhere else for
that matter.
Lincecum gave up seven runs out of which three were earned off nine hits and he let six walks pass him by. All of this was sacrificed in the duration of five and two third innings. This comes as a drastic change from the last time game as he had a tremendous
performance and pitched with exquisite accuracy.
"I was struggling with location all day," Lincecum said. "Six walks is not good."
The Rockies obviously took full advantage of the situation as they belted out hits whenever they got an opportunity, which they got plenty of. Along with that, they were very proud of the fact that they defeated one of the best pitchers in the league at
the moment.
"To put a comeback on one of the best pitchers in the game obviously is more than just a win," Troy Tulowitzki said. "Against that team, and trailing them in the division and them beating us up the whole year, it was a big answer for us.”
Since the season began, the Giants have been hot and cold. They have had their moments where their performances silence the critics but they have also struggled poorly. There line-up fails to perform at times, even against some of the weaker teams in the
League. Aubrey Huff recently snapped out of a hitting drought that he had and finally belted out some runs. Lincecum’s pitching has out shined many others at times, but he has faltered immensely as well.
The situation with their team is starting to look eerily similar to that of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are known and heavily criticised for relying on their four ace pitchers and their offence does not seem to contribute to the wins. The same
could be said for the Giants, but the problem lies in the fact that while the Phillies have four world class pitchers in their line-up like Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt, the Giants only have a young Lincecum. It seems that the fate of
the Giants this season will ride on the shoulders of their young pitcher, putting immense pressure on him to perform consistently.
