Tim Lincecum struggles as Colorado Rockies defeat San Francisco Giants 7-4 - Part 2
The Colorado Rockies were successful in defeating the reigning World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants in the first game of the two-match series in Denver, Colorado. The Rockies won 7-4 due to Tim Lincecum’s off target pitching that gave up just
one too many runs and let six players walk.
Carlos Gonzalez was the one who belted out the humungous three run homer against one of the best pitchers in the league, that helped the Rockies win at the end. Lincecum was obviously not pleased with his performance and even he was surprised of the home-run
by Gonzalez.
"It was just bad location, a change-up up," Lincecum commented. "This kind of place and that kind of hitter? Not really a good pitch."
It wasn’t just a one man effort that won the game for Colorado. It was a combination of cashing in on the opportunities presented by Lincecum’s flawed pitching and team work. The Rockies were running the bases every single time that they could. Maybe Jim
Tracy’s team meeting before the game gave the team the right inspiration and motivation.
The Rockies had previously struggled against the Giants. Their record hasn’t been boasting of impressive numbers as they have been the National League’s worst team in May.
The Giants were the first ones to put up a run on the scoreboard during the match. In the third inning of the game Miguel Tejada scored on a wild pitch courtesy of Clayton Mortensen. The next two runs by the team came in the sixth inning as they belted out
back-to-back home-runs. Andres Torres hit one to right-field that covered a distance of 406 feet. Nate Schierholtz unleashed the next one, once again towards right-field. The ball flew for 371 feet.
From the Rockies’ side the first run came along in the fifth inning as Troy Tulowitzki singled to centre-field as Mortensen and Dexter Fowler scored off it. During the play, Gonzalez moved himself to second base. The first home-run from Colorado came as
Seth Smith belted one out to right-field which went flying for 371 feet. The next run was put up on the scoreboard as Fowler singled to the right and Jose Lopez scored off it, effectively moving Jose Morales to second base.
The hit that wrapped up the game was Gonzalez’s mammoth home-run that covered a distance of 444 feet as Dexter Fowler and Jonathan Herrera scored.
It will be interesting to see how the Rockies carry their winning momentum forward into their next match-up. The Giants put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to cover for Lincecum’s sluggish pitching.
