Tim Lincecum’s record helps San Francisco Giants defeat New York Mets 2-0 – MLB Update
Tim Lincecum managed to strike-out 12 of the New York Mets to record the highest number of double digit strike-out games in San Francisco Giants’ history and take the team to a 2-0 victory over the Mets at Citi Field, New York on Wednesday, May 4.
No one would argue the claims that the San Francisco Giants are slipping terribly. Their performance is not what any baseball fan would expect from the reigning World Series Champion. Their star pitcher Tim Lincecum hasn’t been performing up to the mark
and their hitters, especially Aubrey Huff are on a hitting drought that just seems to go on and on. To say that the Giants fans are disappointed by their performances in April is definitely an understatement.
Thankfully, to the prayers of countless Giants fans, they managed to win their first match in the series against the New York Mets. Lincecum pitched like he used to and to everyone’s pleasant surprise, the Giants’ hitters also belted out runs.
This was the first time since April 19th that they managed to win two games in a row. The statistics look grim though, out of their last 13 games they have struggled to win a mere five.
Lincecum managed to strike out twelve of the Mets which meant that he surpassed Christy Mathewson for the highest number of double digit strike-out games in Giants’ history. The hit that put the Giants above the Mets on the scoreboards came from Pat Burrell
as he belted out a tie breaking single on Wednesday night.
In seven innings, Lincecum gave up five hits and threw 127 pitches, which is the most he’s thrown since the season began. The final five batters that came his way, he struck them all out.
Brian Wilson successfully worked a perfect ninth innings that marked his tenth save of the season as four other Giants’ relievers completed the six hitter.
In the seventh inning, Mike Fontenot hit a RBI single against Chris Capuano and Huff lifted his average by hitting thrice.
The Mets had their moments as well. They struck-out 16 times which is a season high for them.
They were one for nine and had runners perched at all the scoring positions. Unlucky for the Mets as this is the third time they have come to bat against a Cy Young winner within the passage of four games. Last weekend they went up against Roy Halladay and
Cliff Lee, as now they went up against Lincecum. All of whom are Cy Young winners due to their remarkable pitching abilities that are almost unparalleled in all of Major League Baseball.
Lincecum was outstanding as he didn’t let anyone reach third base until the sixth inning. This season, Lincecum has had three double digit strike-outs games and this one marked the 29th of his career.
