Tim Sluiter performs well at the ISPS Handa Wales Open
Tim Sluiter performed well in the first round of the ISPS Handa Wales Open, as he shot a 3-under 68 on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Dutch displayed an amazing performance and finished on the second position at The Celtic Manor Resort in the City of Newport, Wales.
He started the round with two quick birdies and gained attention of the spectators. He added three more birdies on the front nine holes and recorded 31 out of 36.
Then he started the back nine holes again by a birdie and then shot his first bogey of the day, on the 12th hole.
After adding one more birdie, he shot another bogey and ended the round by making a double-bogey on the 17th hole.
“It was great. To go from three over to three under - that's never bad,” he said. “I guess the weather obviously helped me a lot. As soon as the weather got a little less windy, I suddenly started hitting it really close and made a few putts”.
He added: “The wind died down significantly, so it was easy to hit your spots when there's no wind. I was playing half decent in the wind, and I really kept it together with my short game because I didn't hit a lot of greens until the wind died”.
He finished one stroke behind the leader Lee Slattery, who shot a 4-under 67 in the first round of the European Tour event. He scored five birdies and carded only one bogey on Thursday.
Sluiter turned professional in 2009 and has won two professional events so far. Both the victories were recorded at the EPD Tour in 2010.
At the European Tour, he has been playing well since January recorded 18th leaderboard finish at the Africa Open and 11th position at the Sicilian Open.
He has ample chances to become impressive in the next three rounds. He only has to save extra bogeys till Sunday, so that he can maintain his leaderboard position on the top. He can also win the title, if he shows a good performance till the end of the day.
