Tim Smyczek defeats Philip Bester in the second round of qualifying draw at the 2011 US Men’s Clay Court Championships
2010 Rimouski Challenger winner, Tim Smyczek sailed comfortably into the main draw of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Saturday after defeating Philip Bester.
Smyczek is making his second straight appearance at the event. In 2010 he was defeated by Nick Lindhal in the first round of qualifying draw. As predicted by most of the tennis experts that it would be a one-sided victory, the
match was an all-Smyczek show.
The first set took off with Bester serving well. He got in 80 percent of his first serves and his contender lagged far behind with 68 percent. The total number of service points won by both players was not too different, with the
Canadian winning 71 percent on conversion rate as opposed to Smyczek’s 62. The Canadian came out ahead in the opening set as he managed to won more points and thus he converted 100 percent of his break point opportunities and clinched the first set with a
6-4 score line.
The second set saw extreme opposition for the Bester as Smyczek amended his serving massively, escalating his first serve percentage to 62 percent in the set, he won a whopping 81 per cent points on his first serves, whereas Bester
fell behind with a meager 38 per cent. Though bester saved 63 percent in service and 100 per cent in return but double faulting 4 times made him lost the second set with 2-6 score line.
In the deciding set, two aces and two double faults were registered from Smyczek with 56 percent of first serves. Bester on the other hand served 66 percent first serves and won 62 percent of points on them. Smyczek converted 67
percent break point opportunities with 70 percent points on conversion rate. He got the hold of final set with 6-4 score.
Smyczek now goes through to take on Frank Dancevic of Canada who stood victorious against Marinko Matosevic of Australia in straight sets, 7-6(10), 6-1, in the second round qualifiers at U.S Men’s Clay Court Championships.
Smyczek moved into the second round with win over country fellow Denis Kudla in three sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. Given his second best performance at the tournament Smyczek is very happy with this win-win situation. But the
American needs to work hard as the pressure is increasing with the passage of every level.
