Tim Smyczek downs Gabriel Townes in the second round qualies – Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011
In an all-American affair that took place at Atlanta, United States, fourth seeded Tim Smyczek defeated his fellow compatriot, Gabriel Townes, in the second round of the qualifying draws of the Atlanta Tennis Championships on Sunday.
23-year-old Smyczek registered a comprehensive win by taking down Townes in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to make it into the final qualifying draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event. The unseeded
Townes fought for one hour and fourteen minutes before succumbing to his fellow countryman in the second set to end his voyage at the Atlanta Tennis Championships.
Townes was led down by his error-ridden game in the contest, assisting the fourth seed to cruise to victory with the utmost ease. Smyczek remained very aggressive throughout the contest and conceded minimum unforced errors to rocket
away to victory before Townes could get settled in the competition.
The opener took off with equal aggression from both contestants but Townes gradually ran out of gas in the later parts of the game. With an ordinary serve precision of just 53 per cent, Smyczek reeled off 14 out of 16 first serve
points in the opener, making good use of three crucial double faults from his opponent.
No serve breaks were seen in the opening six games of the matchup, with scores tied at 3-3. Smyczek made the first move in the seventh game when he registered the first break point of the day to get to a 4-3 lead and then held
serve to reach 5-3 in the opening set. Townes had two break opportunities when his opponent was serving for the set but he frittered away both of them to drop the first set at 4-6.
Smyczek’s onslaught became more severe in the following set and he stung a quick serve break in the third game to lead 3-1. The American secured 12 out of 16 first serve points in the set number two, with Townes failing to convert
any of his three break chances in the set.
A second consecutive serve break from Smyczek propelled him to 5-1 and the fourth seed carried on his impetus to serve out of the contest at 6-2, making a place in the final round of the qualifying draws of the Championships. Smyczek
will have to go through his other compatriot, Phillip Simmonds, in the next round to make a place in the main draws of the tournament on Monday.
