Tim Southee called up as Mark Gillespie’s replacement for West Indies Tests – Cricket News Update

The 23-year-old right-arm medium-pacer from Northland was initially overlooked for the Test leg of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 tour. However, an impressive show in the ongoing one-day leg of the itinerary prompted the selectors to add him to the already depleted Test
squad.
"Tim has impressed with the way he bowled in the one-day series so far and we have seen an improvement from where he was at the end of the home summer," said national selection manager Kim Littlejohn on Friday.
"He's a like-for-like replacement for Mark in terms of the type of bowler he is and his ability to unsettle the opposition batsmen with pace and bounce," he added further.
Gillespie, 32, who has played 5 Tests for New Zealand and was the leading wicket taker during the home Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 earlier this year, was ruled out of the Test series against the Windies after rolling his ankle while jogging, which caused
ligament damage.
The Kiwis have been hit by a number of injuries since they started their tour of West Indies, late last month. Regular captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 was recovering from a shoulder injury he had sustained during the first Twenty20 in Florida, while all-rounder Jacob

Southee, who has so far played 17 Tests and was dropped from the side following a poor show against Proteas in March, will vie with uncapped http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Trent-Boult-c2708 for a spot in Black Caps’ pace department, which also include regular in Chris
Martin and rookie Doug Bracewell. In the ongoing ODI series against Windies, he is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754’s leading wicket taker, with four scalps in three games.
After losing the two-match T20 series at Lauderhill 0-2, the Kiwis trail the men from Caribbean 3-1 in the ongoing five-ODI series. The fifth one-dayer will be played at Basseterre on Sunday, while the two Tests, in Antigua and Jamaica,
will be played between July 25 and August 6.
