Tim Stauffer shines as San Diego Padres defeat Cincinnati Reds 10-7 – MLB Update
Tim Stauffer put in a brilliant pitching effort as he threw six solid innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-7 at Peoria Sports Complex in Arizona on March, 23.
Stauffer was very excited with his pitching that he wanted to throw in another inning as well. He was left out of his last start due to a hip injury, at that time he required just 81 throws to end his day but he was retired after facing 12 hitters. He also
acquired many chances to suitably examine his hip and was content after the surgical treatments.
Will Venable made double run triple against Dontrelle Willis to go with a home-run in four at-bats. He struck a drive in centre-field during the first inning against the Reds’ starting pitcher Homer Bailey. Willis is a non-roster draftee who is competing
for the last spot in the bull-pen session of the Reds. He struck out a single batter while offering five runs on three strikes with three walks.
The Padres’ relieving pitcher Luke Gregerson also fought back by permitting just five runs on four strikes in one inning. Dustin Moseley and Mike Adams both threw a no-score inning in relief for the Padres. Kevin Frandsen and Chris Denorfia both had two
strikes for the Padres.
After recovery, Stauffer said, “I was able to get in a groove after I settled down a little bit and found my mechanics. (The hip) felt good. I was able to test it covering first a few times, which I was kind of waiting to test it. It's not as much pain as
it was discomfort.”
Frandsen, a non-lineup draftee is contending for a functioning spot with the Padres and has eight strikes in his final 19 at-bats during the beginning of the spring season.
The Padres’ \manager Bud Black was pleased with last weeks performance of his team and hoping for the same in the regular season as well.
Devin Mesoraco and Juan Francisco both made two home-runs for the Reds. Bailey will be the second starter in the Reds’ alternation. He made a single walk in five innings and permitted just four runs on nine strikes. Bailey pitched 85 throws and believed
that he will be prepared for Opening Day.
Bailey supposed that it was a good experience and the only obsession that worried him was the walk. The fast ball he faced was uneven.
Speaking to reporters, the Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said, “It's just a matter of inconsistency. One time good. One time not so good. When he throws strikes, he's tough. He'll probably pitch twice more.”
It will be interesting to see how the Padres carry their confidence and winning momentum forward into the remainder of the spring season and into the regular season.
