Tim Stauffer shines as San Diego Padres humiliate Colorado Rockies 2-0 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ starter, Tim Stauffer had a notable day with the ball as he pitched eight innings with an ERA of 3.58 and struck-out eight batters in the Padres’ 2-0 win against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park, San Diego on June 7.
The three- game series was tied 1-1 with the convincing victory by the Padres.
The pitchers raised the momentum of their teams from the start of the game as they threw four score-less innings. The batters hit sluggish shots and were unable to score any run. At the top of the fourth inning, Todd Helton was grounded out to second base
while Troy Tulowitzki grounded out to short-stop.
The Padres’ batters also got out in the fourth inning without adding some runs for their team. Jason Bartlett was struck-out swinging and Chase Headley flied out to left-field. The Rockies remained score-less at the top of the fifth inning as Charlie Blackmon
was flown out to centre-field and Ubaldo Jimenez struck-out swinging.
On the other hand, the Padres got off the mark by adding two runs on their score-card and took a 2-0 lead. Alberto Gonzalez reached second base on an infield single, Kyle Phillips posted a single run and then Gonzalez advanced to third base on a wide throw.
Gonzalez scored the second and last run of the game when Stauffer singled towards left-centre field.
Stauffer did give up any runs on four hits and allowed just one walk on his 97 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Stauffer said, “I was hoping that would have been tonight. But a couple extra pitches that last inning and my spot coming up in a close game, I
completely understand from his perspective making the move he did. I'm definitely going to keep working.”
Last four innings of the game passed without any run as the pitchers achieved a better command on their pitches and restricted the batters through their curveballs. The fielders also co-operated well with the pitchers to control the scoring runs. Heath Bell
worked the ninth inning for the Padres and did not allow any run in his one inning pitches.
The Padres’ manager, Bud Black had a huge ovation for Stauffer as he said, “He knows maybe why I hit for him and brought in Heath. But I think he also knows now the complete game shutout is in his future. He threw the ball very well. That's as good as we've
seen Tim all season, overall.”
Jimenez was little bit shaky with the ball as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 4.73 and permitted two runs on six hits including two earned runs. He struck-out eight batters and did not give a walk on 104 pitches.
