Tim Stauffer’s pitching take San Diego Padres to 2-1 win over Washington Nationals - MLB Update
The San Diego Padres’ starter, Tim Stauffer had an outstanding night with the ball as the club overpowered league rivals Washington Nationals 2-1 in the second outing of the three-game series, at Nationals Park on Saturday, May 28.
The right-hand hurler, making his eleventh start of the season, held the Nationals scoreless in his first six innings. He might have had a shut-out if Laynce Nix had not blistered a 378-feet homer to the right side of the field. The 28-year-old pitcher allowed
just one run on four hits, walked four and struck-out four batters to earn his fifth game of the season.
He not only threw a splendid spell, he also had a keen eye on the performance of the batters.
"I look more at how the team does in my starts. Sometimes you're not going to win when you pitch well and sometimes you're going to win when you don't pitch well," Stauffer said.
Reliever Mike Adams and closer Heath Bell each threw one scoreless inning to cement the Padres’ 21st win of the season.
While Stauffer kept the opposition under great pressure, Blake Tekotte and Kyle Philips each managed to score an RBI single off the Nationals’ starter Jordan Zimmermann, who otherwise was going exceptionally in the fourth inning to provide a 2-0 lead.
Zimmermann, after allowing these singles threw two more innings and completed his six inning spell without allowing any further runs. Overall he allowed five hits, one walk and struck-out four batters to bear his sixth loss that sent him to a 2-6 record
with a 3.88 ERA this season.
"I just pitch the same game I'd pitch if they got 10 runs in the first inning," Zimmermann said.
The Nationals’ relievers Sean Burnett and Todd Coffey each threw a scoreless inning, they remained helpless to take the game back to their side. Closer Henry Rodriguez also tossed one scoreless inning to provide the batters some relief of which they did
not take any advantage and sent their team to their 29th defeat of the season.
"We just didn't get it done offensively. There's not an explanation for it," manager Jim Riggleman said. "It just didn't happen."
Washington is now ready to for their final game of the three game series and will be looking to take their revenge on the Padres.
