Tim Thomas, Joe Thornton and Duncan Keith named NHL’s Three Stars of the Week
The National Hockey League has named Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton, and Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith as its Three Stars of the
Week for the week of 24 – 31 October.
The top billing went to Thomas, who had been nothing less than stellar for the Bruins last week. He earned a shutout in each of his two starts, which began with a 2-0 win over the Toronto
Maple Leafs on Thursday, 28 October. Thomas turned aside all of the 20 shots taken by the Leafs. His second shutout came on Saturday, 30 October after the Bruins blanked the Ottawa Senators 4-0, stopping all 29 of the shots he faced. The 36-year-old Thomas
ended the week with a 0.50 goals-against average, and a save percentage of .984.
Earning the second star was Joe Thornton, who has been spectacular for the Sharks lately. He led all NHL players with three goals and eight assists for a total of eight points on the week.
Thornton’s strongest effort to date came on Wednesday, 27 October when the Sharks faced the New Jersey Devils. He scored a hat trick and added a pair of assists to end the game with five points to his name. The hat trick was the fourth of Thornton’s career.
Thornton made it an eight-point week by adding three assists in a 5-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, 30 October.
The third star honour went to Keith, who led all defencemen by putting up seven points (1G, 6A) during the week. Keith, who was last season’s recipient of the Norris Trophy as the league’s
top defenceman, had numerous multi-point games. He earned three assists in a game against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday, 29 October, despite the Blackhawks losing the game by a score of 7-4.
