Tim Thomas shines as Boston Bruins dominate Washington Capitals 4-1 -NHL Update
Boston did not have any sort of difficulty in keeping the former Eastern Conference dominating team at bay as veteran Stanley Cup winning goalie, Tim Thomas, blocked 35 shots, helping the Bruins dominate Washington Capitals, 4-1, at the sold-out Verizon
Center in Washington, District of Columbia, on Sunday night, February 5, 2012.
Seeing Thomas in the nation’s capital, the fans were sure that he did not get a warm welcome as they booed him at every opportunity they could, but seeing the outcome of the contest, it is quite easy to tell who came out with the last laugh.
"I think I'm pretty much booed at every arena, wouldn't you say?" Thomas said. "Even before anything happened?"
Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand kicked off the scoring for the Boston Bruins, giving them a two point lead at the end of the opening period while both got their 19th goals of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
Lucic put the Bruins ahead midway through while Marchand came out strong with the puck and added another one with less than two minutes remaining.
Matt Hendricks and Adam McQuaid were awarded a five minute major penalty for fighting after tensions rose following Marchand’s lead extension shot.
"We just weren't playing our best of late," Bruins’ forward, Brad Marchand, said. "We knew we had to get back on track. We did a lot of good things last game and we wanted to carry it over to today. We knew that when we play our game we're a pretty good
team, but when we don't, we're not. We enjoy winning and have a lot of fun when we're doing it."
After a scoreless second period, Marchand made sure Boston would not allow their momentum by finding Tyler Seguin open in front of the Washington net, assisting him for his 20th goal of the season.
Marcus Johansson tapped in the only Washington goal at the 12:04 mark of the third period while Rich Peverley added another with less than a minute to go, insuring an already secure matchup.
Boston will be taking on Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday while Washington has the next against Florida Panthers on Tuesday.
