Wasim Akran, the former Pakistan captain, has said that it is time for Anil Kumble to step down as India captain. He feels that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should take over Indian crickets premier position.

Do you agree with Wasim?

  1. Partially. It would be good if he started grooming his replacement.

  2. the BBCI should decide

  3. i dont agree with most sub cotinetal people, they chat s**+*

  4. No. I don't agree with this view at all. Wasim should better look at his team rather than talk about Indian team. It is only in the 2007-08 series with Pakistan that Kumble showed his class by claiming 18 wickets in 3 test matches for 477 runs in 1,071 balls. Wasim may not have forgotten this. While I respect Wasim, I feel that he should respect Kumble too.

One bad series with Sri Lanka in which Dhoni chickened out and everyone starts talking 'Kumble should go' and Dhoni should get the job. It is a typical sub-continental attitude. A win and they take you to sky and a loss, you are dumped like a hot potato. Where did Kumble make a mistake ? Agreed that he had one personally bad 3 match series and is it reason enough to drop him as a captain ? If anyone sees Kumble's career closely, he will realise that Kumble performs well in 80 percent of all series. The series with SRL is in the 20 percent class. Kumble will spring back heroically against the Aussies, I am sure. His leadership qualities are intact.

  5. it depends on how he proferms in this series.

  6. With due respect to Wasim Akram's statement, I must say that personally, I don't feel that it's the time for Kumble to go. He can continue as long as he doesn't lose his consistency in bowling. It's too rash to judge a skipper's standard of leadership by just looking at the outcome of one particular series, and also, it isn't very fair. I think Akram's statement may have been provoked by the fact that India lost miserably against Sri Lanka recently under Kumble, and actually won the ODI series under Dhoni. But the situation was entirely different in the 2 cases. Kumble isn't the only one to be blamed for India's dismal performance-perhaps the captain had no notion that all our big guns would so timidly succumb to the mesmerizing spells of Murali and Mendis. At the same time, it's not entirely credit of India's ODi victory shouldn't go to Dhoni alone, the entire team deserves to be applauded for their performance. Dhoni was fortunate that guys like Badrinath, Raina, or Kohli clicked on crucial occassions. What would Dhoni do if these inexperienced players didn't perform?

Besides, I don't really feel that Dhoni cares much about test cricket, and he is ready to take the responsibilty of the test skipper. Otherwise, he wouldn't have avoided the SL test series on grounds of a flimsy excuse. Dhoni has done nothing in tests so far, which sets him up as an accomplished wicket-keeper batsman in tests, while Kumble's records speak volumes for him. Besides, Dhoni can't handle the experienced side of the squad properly, while Kumble can. Now, the captain should be somebody, whom every teammate can respect, and Kumble fulfils that criteria well. Certainly, he has a better cricketing mind than Dhoni. The only thing in which Jumbo lacks behind is aggression. But now, Dhoni seems to be getting a lot of support, for being chosen as the test captain. Coach Gary Kirsten virtually reiterated Wasim's words, but was reprimanded for attempting to influence the selectors.

  7. Personally, i would like to see Dhoni as captain. He is aggressive as a player and has good composure/. Sehwag should be appointed Vice-captain if Kumble retires.

  8. Kumble is getting a little long in the tooth. Indian cricket would benefit from a younger man being in charge. Bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the job. I'm not entirely sure if dhoni is that man. But there doesn't seem to be an abundance of candidates around.

  9. This is the time for Kumble to call it a day.

But Sehwag should be given captaincy ahead of Dhoni.

  10. Sorry Wasim but I don't agree. Anil Kumble should carry on being captain until he retires from Cricket. Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be a good Captain but I don't think he will succeed with India.

Maybe after he retires I think either Tendulkar or Yuvraj Singh should be Captain. Anybody else agree?

  11. I think it probably is the right time to move aside (not necessarily for Dhoni, I'm sure there are some other possible candidates) for someone who has some fresh ideas and can move the team forward in a productive and positive manner, India have just lost 2 series in a row (against Australia and recently Sri Lanka). A captain needs to lead by example and Kumble's performances haven't exactly been setting the world alight recently.

I don't think India will make a change right now though (or even in the near immediate future), I think they'll wait until after the England series in the winter and weigh up their options then. If India do lose that series (and it is a possibility considering how well England are playing right now) then I don't really see how he can still stay in the job.

  12. I think Yuvraj Singh should be captain.

    Hope that answers.

  13. i agree with scott

  14. I don't agree with Akram. Basically Dhoni is yet to prove as a batsman in test matches. And he has not played enough test matches to gain experience in test cricket. Dhoni is a material for Test Captaincy, but raw material. He should not be rushed to made captain of Test team.

Akram is a great bowler, but his views are not always so great.
