Time for Tseng to regain reputation hit hard by slump
Yani Tseng has stood firmly at the number one position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings for 91 weeks now—but a performance slump appears to have stalled her campaign to become the best player of the year once again.
Despite making a dazzling start to the 2012 season that saw her grab three LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) titles early in the year, a debilitating slump has proved to be more damaging than it was commonly realised.
Tseng’s reputation as a tough player has been hit hard—if not eroded completely—as she has endured massive defeats that have seen her teetering outside the top 50, missing cuts and displaying shots as awry as a rookie’s.
The top-ranked prodigy, who belongs to Taiwan, found herself compelled to heed her fans’ reaction. Having gained a huge fan following not just in Asia, but America as well, Tseng’s fans decided to come hard on her, lashing out at her for being worse than average in tournaments.
Her latest performance in Asia, although not something to help her end a winless stint, proved to be a refreshing start. Having recorded finishes inside the top 5 in the last three tournaments, held in Asia, Tseng has managed to regain her lost confidence.
The upcoming Lorena Ochoa Invitational, which is set to start from November 8-11, at the Guadalajara Country Club, will provide Tseng a good opportunity to further improve her performance.
Although the roster is going to feature competent players like American Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer, the biggest threat the Taiwanese star may face will be from past winners.
Defending champion Catriona Matthew of Scotland and 2010 winner I.K. Kim are likely to give a tough time to their rivals.
Matthew said while talking to the media on Wednesday that she is confident to grab a victory in Mexico once again, as she has been impatiently waiting to play at the Guadalajara Country Club.
She also said that the roster is not easy to handle, but she will rely on short game. “I would say it’s such a strong field anyone has got a chance to winning. All of us are hoping ourselves. Anyone is capable of winning perhaps it comes down to who holes the putts”.
