With the current entropic nature of the universe. One would think it would only be possible to time travel into the future.

Not because there are multiple existing timelines, but by manipulating  your own current state of existance. Which means you would alter how time affects yourself, sending you on a one way trip to the future. Sorry, no past exists, you can't go back.

Our machines can travel only in three dimensions. They can't travel in the other eight dimensions of string theory. Time is only a process of change, not a dimension of space, so our machines can't travel in it. Time slows down as something travels faster. At the speed of light, time becomes zero, but matter can't travel that fast because its inertia is infinite at that speed and it is squashed flat in direction of travel. In the future, we might be able to travel fast enough to slow down time significantly. A rocket might be gone eight years and age just two years.  If twins are 30 years old, and one twin was on the rocket, but  the other stayed on earth, the one on the rocket would be 32, and the one on earth would be 38 when the rocket returned. That's as close to a time machine as is possible.
