Question:

Time off for scrums, what do you think?

While we are going along this line of questioning with regards to rules. It pisses me off that time off is called after a team forms a scrum. When did this become common because it has only been happening for a couple of seasons. Surely if a ref thinks time is being wasted he can blow a penalty. Likewise with goal line drop outs. Time wasting tactics would soon end if penalties were handed out.

It seems when time is blown off after one team forms a scrum both teams then take an eternity to pack down. Stoppages like this are c**p and rob from the spectacle of the game.

like the previous question regading video ref calls, there are too many stoppages in todays game.

  1. Scrummaging was once an art and the forwards had to be taught the correct way to do their job. Now it is just pack in because you have too and no art, just feed the ball out the back and off we go.How many scrums are won against the feed these days? Very few!  Halfbacks in the bygone era were so good at their trade because they had to make a scrum work for their team. Pathetic rules now. It was exciting hoping your team would win the scrum, now it is just a formality just because we have scrums.

  2. Well mate, as a player, when i used to play, players pretty much need scrums especially after defending for 6 sets in a row, it gets VERY tiring. Other than that i think they need to make scrums worth something to players besides just being a time to have a quick break. Maybe bring back pushing like it used to be?

  3. the time lost waiting for scrums etc. can cost a team a win in really close matches.

i reckon either stop time for scrums or leave time on and bring back real scrums with pushing and actually winning against the head.

  4. Time off?? Just get rid of scrums altogether. Scrums are a waste of time, because of the lack of a contest in the scrum, we already know who gets the ball. Hand the ball over, let them play the ball and get on with the game already.

  5. Let the referee decide if a team is dawdling. Then he can blow time out. Unnecessary stoppages affect both teams, the video ref being the worse. In rugby, the video ref is only used for incident on or over the tryline. As such the video ref has very little bearing on game stoppages.

The answer really is a full blown response on what the league needs to do.

  6. why don't they just tap and go
