Question:

Time period between MMR vaccinations?

Is there a recommended time period that there should be between the two MMR vaccinations? Usually children receive their first shot at 13 months, but my daughter had her first at 2 years 4 months. The nurse wants me to come in and give my daughter her second jab - she's nearly 4, and that would be the normal time. Is just over 18 months too short a time (I don't want to stress her immune system) - or does it make no difference?

  1. There is no set time frame in between---it can vary.  Your daughter is on what is called a "catch-up" schedule which is why the time period is shorter.  It is more beneficial for her to get the other MMR vaccine now b/c more vaccines are to come.  Technically, a nurse/doc will tell you there is no risk of interference.  However, I am assuming all her vaccines will have to be on a catch-up schedule and that will be more stressful.  You don't want to wait for the MMR and then push it too close to the other shots (like Hep, Chickenpox, etc).  You can always opt for the "one needle at a visit thing".  If you make sure you are diligent about going (b/c vaccines are EXTREMELY important) you can bring your child in once a week for shots.  I don't allow my children more than 1 vaccine a visit.  It is a pain, but just a personal preference.  I don't want to risk anything.  Good Luck and follow recommendations while informing  yourself.  CDC.gov has a "mock" schedule if you have other questions.
