It will be the understatement of the century if one says that Liverpool did not perform well in the recent past. Scathing criticism has come in from all directions against the players, the owners and most of all, Liverpool Manager Rafael Benitez. Former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has come out with his take on the season. The former England forward is clear that it is time for the Spaniard coach to move on.
Rafa’s future has been the topic of debate in recent times, following the dismal season that the reds have had, which saw them finish in the seventh position in the Barclays Premier League. The team has also missed out on the chance to compete in the European Champions League as well as the Europa league.
And now with the two American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillete seeking a buyer for the club, the uncertainty surrounding the club is higher then ever before. Robby Fowler, who came back to Liverpool because of Manager Benitez, four years ago, is certain that Rafa has had his time with Liverpool and should look for other opportunity.
Fowler said, "With Rafa, what you see is what you get. I think he's quite shrewd and keeps everything to himself,"
"I was always grateful to him for bringing me back, so I always have a bit of a soft spot for him, but at the end of the day it's a big club and no one is bigger than the club.
"First and foremost we want to be winning trophies and to be the top dogs. It's a tricky situation. I don't want to be sat here saying he has got to go; everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.
The former Liverpool striker said that he just wants Liverpool to do well, whether it is under Benitez or anyone else. The most important thing is the club, and everything is secondary. Although it may be a bit too optimistic, but Fowler believes the team should finish at the top of the league every season.
Fowler, who is now pretty much at the twilight of his career, hinted that he is planning on taking the management all by himself. After hanging his boots, the big job at Anfield remains his dream destination. He has Liverpool in his heart and will always perform for childhood clubs in the future.
The 35 year old is currently playing in the Australian domestic league, representing Perth Glory. He still has one more year on his contract, so an instant move to Liverpool, as manager may be distant dream for now.
Fowler does not have any coaching experience, which is needed to manage a professional club. Therefore, he has a long way to go before anyone can consider him for managing a top-fight club let alone being in charge of Liverpool. He is under no illusion himself, admitting that his dream of becoming a Liverpool manager is "a million miles away".
Fowler said that he plans to take the long route. He is likely to take up the manager’s positions from a club in the lower division in England. Slowly and steadily, he aims to make his way up, and someday may end up at his beloved club, where he is revered as a pioneer of football in England.
