What is your opinion on why we don't have the power of time travel? Please give serious answers because I really want to know your honest thoughts on time travel and why we can't.

  1. In order for time travel to be possible it would mean that all points of time exist simultaneously and our (seeming) forward travel through it in daily life is an illusion of linear time where none exists.  I happen to think this makes no sense and is theoretically true only because things that prevent it are currently unknown.

Basic time travel as a concept uses the theory of relativity as its base.  Relativity describes how differing speed effects the passage of time on two different objects.  If time can be manipulated so easily (sort of) in one direction then it would stand to reason that it could be manipulated in the reverse.  To understand time travel theory problems you must first get your head around relativity..... which to me seems absurd (I admit I am no Einstein).

The reason I have a problem with relativity boils down a simple mental exercise.  Imagine you are on a space ship traveling at nearly the speed of light in a circle around the solar system and ending back at Earth.  Lets say this trip is a total of 1 light year long, so you get in your ship and travel for one year (and a little more) at .99999 the speed of light.  Relativity dictates that when you return from your year long trip the Earth will have aged decades, or even centuries.

That makes no sense because from the relative perspective of Earth, your vessel would be traveling 1 light year, at light speed.... so you should return in one year.  From your relative perspective you should be traveling 1 light year at light speed so you should return in 1 year.  If this does not sync up, then it means that objects travelling near this speed would actually appear much slower to viewers, or the trip would only take the person on board a few minutes.  That is a serious problem, because if you were trying to pilot such a vessel the outside would be just a blur and you wouldn't really be traveling at light speed but well beyond it (at least from your perspective, because this 1 light year trip would have taken you a half hour).

So it is safe to say at this point that I don't understand the basic concept enough to comment with validity on time travel.  I probably shouldn't have bothered trying, but I did..... and unfortunately I can't go back in time and tell myself to not start typing.

  2. Because atoms are a constant.

  3. because people aren't smart enough

  4. If we ever do get the power then that means we have it now (brought back from the future).  So its most likely that there is a battle of time travel going on in the space time continuem that was eventually somehow sorted out

  5. Because Obama isnt president yet....

  6. b/c in order to breach the space time continuum an object must be traveling faster than the speed of light. our technology hasn't yet (and probably never will) allowed us to accomplish such a feat.

  7. Time is not space.  You can't travel in time the way you can travel in space.

Time is simply a change in matter.  That's how time is always measured.  Measurement of some periodic change in matter is the basic principle of all clocks.

Perhaps if you can reverse exactly the change in matter that has occured over a period of time.  Then this would be equivalent to going back in time.  But to truly go back in time in its full sense you would have to reverse the change in matter of the whole universe.  Which is not possible.

  8. Yvonne,

I doubt if anyone can answer that question since it's still in the realm of theory.  Of course, people can say that if it will be possible in the future, then it possible now.....

However, if it's true that time travel creates an alternate future everytime someone would travel and alter the future, then we wouldn't know about time travel, (if it is discovered in the future), because changes would occur in an alternate universe.

I realize the universe is infinite (supposedly) and that it must contain an infinite number of things (perhaps even alternate universes), however, time travel, and the subsequent possible changes, seem too compicated and diverse to actually be a reality.  The alternate universe would of course, explain how one could go back in time and shoot their father, however, I don't believe time travel would serve any logical purpose.  Imagine millions of people, travelling across time, changing events, creating alternate endings, etc, etc., to what end or what purpose?

I honestly believe alternate universe is an invention in someone's mind, to allow the debate of time travel to continue .

So the short answer, IMO, is no time travel is not possible.

  9. if we could time travel we would mess up the things in the past too
