Timea Babos outlasts Alla Kudryavtseva in qualifiers – New Haven Open 2012
Qualifying top seed, Timea Babos from Hungary hit back to outsmart the Russian contestant, Alla Kudryavtseva, in a three-set thriller at the New Haven Open at Yale 2012 on Friday. She nudged up a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the 24-year-old to labour into
the second round of the qualifying competition at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Connecticut, United States.
The Hungarian starlet sought her rhythm after losing the opening set. She required two hours and 11 minutes to carve out the victory and progress into the second round of the qualifying competition at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event.
Kudryavtseva high-spiritedly entered the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. She held her opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. The Russian continued hitting angled shots and swiped in remaining serves after dusting away both breakpoints she came across. Kudryavtseva
got the breakthrough in the 11th game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The 19-year-old on the other side of net rebounded in the follow-up set. She got the critical break in the second game to jump to a 3-0 lead before the Russian could hold on. Regardless of squandering her edge in the seventh game, the Hungarian cashed in
her second break chance in the very next game and eventually sealed the equaliser with a 6-3 success.
Ranked 62nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Babos kept momentum running towards the final set and dug the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Regardless of losing the following three games, the Hungarian stayed calm and recovered
in the fifth game. She held her remaining serves and got the breakthrough in the ninth game, subsequently clinching the decider with a 6-4 score line.
Next up for Babos is the Uzbek contender, Akgul Amanmuradova, who battled past Brazil’s Teliana Pereira in a three set thriller to set up this outing.
The qualifying this seed, Mathilde Johansson, face a bitter reality later that day. She was edged out by the Spanish challenger, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, in straight sets in almost one and a half hour-long marathon.
