Timea Babos outshines Alexandra Cadantu to win the title – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
Hungarian starlet, Timea Babos, eased past the Romanian challenger, Alexandra Cadantu, in straight sets at the Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey 2012 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the 21-year-old to lift her first WTA (Women’s Tennis Association)
career title at this International hard court tournament taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.
The 18-year-old surprised everyone after stealing the limelight at this WTA event. The Hungarian only had a single main draw appearance at Bogota WTA event last week but after reaching the semis, she impressed everyone. Babos not only avenged her loss at
the Kristinehamn WTA event last year but also levelled the head-to-head series by 1-1 against the Romanian.
"I was actually surprised because it was my first final and I wasn't nervous or tight," the blooming Hungarian said after the match. "I just tried to play my tennis and stay aggressive. I was also really trying to keep my serve all the time, and she didn't
have a break point, which was really positive for me. Then as soon as I had a chance on her serve I played a good point or hit a winner when I really needed it. I'm so glad to make it. This is a really new feeling. It feels amazing."
Ranked 68th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Babos high spiritedly entered the Sierra Madre Tennis Club and smoothly held entire serves without facing any hindrance. She capitalised on one out of two break chances and subsequently clinched the opener
with a 6-4 score line.
The teenager kept momentum sailing into the following set and continued plucking her serves without facing any real competition. She again converted one out of two break opportunities to her advantage and sealed the set by winning six games to four.
Overall, the Hungarian smacked five aces and regardless of manipulating a lower first serve share, she spectacularly marked 27 out of 30 points on it. Babos then ended the match with 66 points as opposed to Cadantu’s 53.
Babos displayed top notch performance throughout the week. She stunned the third seeded Sorana Cirstea and the second seeded Sara Errani en route to finals.
On the other side of net, Cadantu also showed awe-inspiring skills throughout the tournament. Eighth seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino and the sixth seed, Greta Arn, became the victims of the Romanian. She manifested an amazing first serve share of 64 percent
and registered 30 out of 43 points on it. However, Cadantu failed to seek any break chance and eventually suffered the shock.
