Timo Goss: Spanish GP upgrades for McLaren will shrink gap with Red Bull – Formula 1 news
McLaren engineering director Timo Goss has revealed that more than a handful of upgrades will be seen in their 2011 car, MP4-26.
Goss added that some of the upgrades will be visible from outside and others will be inside the shell. He further hoped that the gap from the front running team, Red Bull Racing, will minimise.
Goss stated, “We have a package of upgrades which we're taking to Spain. It's a package of about 10-12 upgrades, some of which will be recognisable from the outside and some that won't be. We're always trying to accelerate getting upgrades to the circuit
as quickly as possible.”
He further added that McLaren will also try out some of the upgrades which were planned for the Turkish Grand Prix.
Talking about the Turkish Grand Prix upgrades, Goss commented, “Just prior to Turkey we had a minor issue that meant I wasn't confident that the upgrade would be durable over a race distance. So we pulled out of that at the last minute.”
Furthermore, Goss stated that McLaren’s first aim in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix will be to close down the gap from the front running Red Bull team. McLaren are a long 43 points behind the beverage company on the constructors’ table after the opening
four races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
With one race win in the Chinese Grand Prix and a total of 3 podium finishes, McLaren are well on course to stop the Red Bull’s glory early in the 2011 season.
Talking about the drought of overtaking in the Spanish Grand Prix, Goss said that the Formula 1 innovations will have a dramatic effect on the race.
Goss stated that fast degrading Pirelli tyres along with an extra average 15kmph boost from the Drag Reduction System will make the Spanish GP more than interesting.
With the race starting from the Friday Free Practice session, McLaren’s duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will try their level best to maximise the potential of the car and bag some points.
