Timo Nieminen outfoxes Edward Corrie to qualify for the main round – Bath Challenger 2012
Finn veteran, Timo Nieminen, outclassed the 24-years-old Briton, Edward Corrie, to make his way into the main round of the Bath Challenger. He dumped the youngster in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
It was a taxing encounter to say the least and the score line is harsh on the Briton who deserved one more chance in the form of the third set to qualify for the main round. It was just the luck of the Finn contestant that drowned
the British player. A couple of breakpoints ended in cheap fashion; Nieminen winning net court points.
Corrie started the match with a comprehensive serve hold and his opponent followed his footpaths with the scores ticking over to 1-1. In the fourth game of the set, the Finn player was broken that assigned the lead to the inferior
ranked Briton.
It was something that delighted the viewers and left those wondering that how can such a low ranked player come up with a classic display of all-round shots especially down the line winners. The scenario seemed fruitful for the
Briton but he knew little that his bad luck was going to ruin his world class display in the following games.
The following five games witnessed a couple of breakthroughs for the Finn who turned the tables on his opponent with a lead of 5-4 and following serve game under his belt. It was cruel on the Briton but no one can fight their fortune.
A cracking serve hold that feature just one point for the British contestant gifted the first set triumph for the Finn and shattered the confidence of his opponent into pieces.
The second set featured two successive serve hold at both ends before the pivotal breakthrough for the Finn was witnessed in the fifth game. Nothing was going right for the Briton who had tried his best. It was not his day at all
and despite creating several opening in the following games, he failed to convert any into a breakpoint that ended the match in favour of the Finn.
Timo Nieminen joins in Illya Marchenko, Marek Michalicka and Michael Ryderstedt into the main round qualifier list.
