Timothy Gudsell wins Kugler-Anderson Memorial at 2011 Tour of Somerville: Cycling News
Pure Black Racing team’s Timothy Gudsell won his first victory of this season in the United States of 2011 Tour of Somerville, on Monday, May 30.
The New Zealander, Gudsell, covered a distance of 80.5 kilometres in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 36 seconds.
Karl Menzies of UnitedHealthcare Pro cycling was in the second spot, while Eric Young of Bissell Pro Cycling grabbed the third place.
Previously, Gudsell won the first stage of Tour of Wellington and grabbed the second position in National Team Pursuit Championship in 2006. He was runner-up in Oceania Cycling Championship, Team Pursuit in 2007.
The 67th annual Kugler-Anderson Memorial race held in New Jersey. The four-corner circuit for the event started from the West Main Street final with an 800 metres drag to the crossing line.
The race was belligerent with persistent assaults. Majority of the attacks came from Champion System, Mountain Khakis and Pure Black Racing, along with New York, New Jersey and local teams.
The group of eight riders made their first break in the race that included one rider from UnitedHealthcare. He was not happy with it and chased them down the hill.
After few kilometres, a new group was formed that included roughly 20 riders including, Gudsell, Menzies, James Williamson, Scott Lyttle, Shem Rodger, Alejandro Borrajo, Eric Schildge, Matt Friedmann, Bobby Lea, Rafael Meran, Andrea Grendene, Clayton Barrows
and Gavin Mannion.
After winning the stage, Gudsell said, "I broke away in the last lap to win solo, it is my first NRC win and a good one for our team. We went into today wanting to make a breakaway because we don’t have a pure sprinter. We just wanted to be as aggressive
as possible and we had four riders in the last breakaway, so we were happy with that."
Gudsell further added, "It was quite an aggressive race the whole way. But, mid way through is when we got away. I probably finish two to four seconds ahead of the sprint from our breakaway and then our breakaway sort of split apart and the field came in
behind that."
In the final lap of the race, Gudsell paced his speed and jumped ahead of break-away riders. He gained an advantage of a few seconds and crossed the finish-line, ahead of the other riders.
The three riders Zoltan Tisza (Champion System Racing), Dave Jordan (Crca and L-Raphael.Com - Leopard) and Steven Black (Haymarket Bicycles) were disqualified from the race.
