Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery, DeLisha Milton: Top WNBA players from August 3 games
Only one game took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. Playing at Staples Center, Connecticut Sun defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 79-70 to record their second straight victory.
It was the second defeat of Los Angeles in a row and sixth in their previous seven games. The score was tied at 56-56 at the end of third period, but Connecticut opened the fourth quarter with 12 unanswered points and maintained their lead down the stretch.
Here is an overview of some of the noticeable performances given in the game:
Tina Charles
Tina Charles knocked the opposition down with her brilliant double-double. Charles tallied a game-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the victory. It was fourth consecutive double-double of the Charles and 12th
overall this season.
Charles, the reigning WNBA rookie of the year, scored five of Connecticut’s 12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, “My team was down, I just want to win. I am really competitive, I want to let my team know that I am there
for them and I just want their respect.” She said after the game.
The 22-year-old centre ended with 8 for 12 from the field and 4 for 6 from free throw line. The two-time WNBA All-Star also dished out two assists for her team. Charles is averaging 17.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game so far
in this season.
Renee Montgomery
Renee Montgomery also helped the Sun trample the Sparks, leaving everyone awestruck with her brilliant performance. The 5 ft 7 in guard punctuated 16 points, including nine of them in the first half.  The 24-year-old also dished
out a game high six assists for the victors.
Montgomery, a South Charleston High School’s product, scooped out game high four 3-pointers in the win. The player shot 5 for 10 from the field in more than 25 minutes of action.
Asjha Jones
Asjha Jones was the third major contributor in Connecticut’s victory. Jones scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds in 30 minutes and 26 seconds. The forward player went 6 for 11 from the field.
DeLisha Milton
DeLisha Milton put on another marvellous performance for the Sparks but it was not enough to overcome the terrific performance of the visiting team early in the fourth period. Milton scored a team high 14 points on a 6 for 9 shooting
from the floor, including 2 for 2 from three-point range. Milton, a two-time WNBA Champion, also grabbed five rebounds in the losing effort.
Tina Thompson
Tina Thompson was another bright spot in the defeat of Los Angeles. The 36-year-old forward recorded 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and stole the ball once. Thompson hit 3 of 5 three-pointers in almost
29 minutes of action.
Ebony Hoffman
Ebony Hoffman also posted 13 points in the loss. Former Indiana Fever player Hoffman pulled down four rebounds and blocked one shot. The player shot 5 for 13 from the field.
