Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery lead as Connecticut Sun beat Washington Mystics 82-75 – WNBA Recap
Tina Charles had 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals as Connecticut Sun beat Washington Mystics 82-75 on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena. It was Connecticut’s third victory in their previous four games.
Charles shot 6 for 18 from the flied and 4 for 5 from free throw line. Renee Montgomery also racked up 16 points and stole the ball twice in the victory. Danielle McCray added 12 points and three rebounds while Kara Lawson contributed
10 points, including a big shot from down town that gave Connecticut an 81-73 advantage. In addition to a 10-point spurt, Lawson dished out five assists and exceeded 600 career assists in her eighth season.
Tan White also surpassed 2,000 career points with nine points off the bench. White also grabbed a game best 10 rebounds.
Crystal Langhorne led Washington with 17 points on a 7 for 10 shooting from the field and grabbed five rebounds in more than 24 minutes. Marissa Coleman and Matee Ajavon chipped in with 14 points each in the loss. Coleman also
pulled down six rebounds while DeMya Walker came off the bench with 12 points, shooting 5 for 6 from the floor, and five rebounds for the Mystics, who have lost seven of their previous ten games.
Washington shot 44.4 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the line while Connecticut shot 41.9 percent from the field and 82.8 from free throw line. The Mystics committed 20 turnovers as compared to just 14 by the Sun.
In addition to that, Connecticut outscored the visiting team 13-5 on fast break points. The big difference in the game was that the Sun attempted 29 free throws while the while the visiting team attempted only seven.
Mystics shot 69 percent (11 of 16) from the file the filed in the first quarter, taking a 29-26 lead into the second. Sun however limited Washington to just 14 points in the second quarter and converted the three-point first period
deficit into a point lead, 44-43, at halftime.
Mystics made a comeback in the third period and tied the game at 59 before White hit a pair of free throws in the last minute of the quarter to put the Sun ahead by 61-59.
White pinned 2 free throws early in the fourth quarter to push Connecticut’s lead to 63-59, but Langhorne responded with a lay-up and a jumper to knot the game at 63. Connecticut broke the game after that and scored six consecutive
points to pull away. They never trailed again.
