Tina Charles: A look back at her double-double games in the 2011 WNBA Regular Season – Part 4
August 7 vs. Phoenix Mercury
On August 7 at US Airways Center, Tina Charles spearheaded the Connecticut Sun for a brilliant victory over the Phoenix Mercury with an electrifying performance. Charles recorded her sixth straight double-double with 23 points,
including a 12-footer with 5 seconds to go in overtime, and a game-high 17 rebounds. Charles ended the game on 11 for 24 shooting from the field.
The 22-year-old smashed the opposition with 10 of her points in the crucial second half of the game to overcome a 46-41 halftime deficit and escorted the team for a hard-fought 96-95 overtime victory.
August 9 vs. Chicago Sky
Two days later at Mohegan Sun Arena, Charles tied the league record with her seventh consecutive double-double in Connecticut’s 69-58 victory over the Chicago Sky. Seattle Storm’s Lauren Jackson set the previous record in 2003.
“I am honoured to be mentioned with her,” Charles said.
Charles landed a team-high 16 points on 4 for 6 shooting from free throw line and gathered 11 rebounds in the second consecutive victory for the Sun.
August 16 vs. Minnesota Lynx
Connecticut’s rookie centre stole the show on August 16 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The prolific superstar chipped in 16 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to help the Sun send the Minnesota Lynx to their most disappointed defeat of
the regular season, 108-79. Charles posted 13 of her points in the first half as Connecticut held a 57-42 lead at halftime and pinned 6 of 7 free throws in the victory.
August 18 vs. New York Liberty
Although the WNBA All-Star centre failed to lead her team to a victory against the New York Liberty, she showed some great resistance against Cappie Pondexter and New York. Charles racked up a blistering game-high 29 points and
gathered 14 rebounds in Connecticut’s 84-81 overtime defeat to Liberty at Prudential Center on August 18.  She went 10 for 20 from the field and 9 for 11 from the line.
Connecticut’s 6 ft 4 in centre was invincible throughout the four quarters but she just could not match the offensive prowess of Liberty in the O.T., who outscored them down the stretch.
The Liberty head coach John Whisenant praised Charles’ effort and said, “She is a great player and she's hard to defend,” “We did a better job of keeping her away from the ball later on.”
August 19 vs. Atlanta Dream
At Philips Arena on August 19, Tina Charles registered her 18th double-double of the regular season but could not beat the Atlanta Dream, who knocked them down 94-88 in overtime. Charles added 15 points on 6 for 13 shooting
and grabbed 11 rebounds in Connecticut’s second straight loss.
