Tina Charles: A look back at her double-double games in the 2011 WNBA Regular Season – Part 5
August 28 vs. Tulsa Shock
Although Tina Charles headed the Connecticut Sun in both scoring and rebounding but she could not escape them from an 83-72 loss to the WNBA worse Tulsa Shock on August 28 at BOK Center. Connecticut’s centre player racked up 21
points and pulled down 10 rebounds in more than 32 minutes of action.
Charles scored 17 of her points in the first half of the game as Connecticut held a 43-32 lead at halftime. However, the Shock’s interim coach Teresa Edwards inserted centre Abi Olajuwon into the lineup in the third period with
an aim to defend Sun’s scoring machine. Olajuwon limited Charles from every angle and did not allow her to score even a single point in the third quarter.
September 2 vs. Indiana Fever
The 6,991 in attendance at Mohegan Sun Arena on September 2 had come to see the great Tina Charles, one of the greatest players in the WNBA, brought big cheers. The Sun’s rookie All-Star played too well, recording the fifth triple-double
in WNBA history in an 83-55 victory over the Indiana Fever. The 6 ft 4 in centre punctuated 10 points, dished out 7 assists and grabbed 16 rebounds in the victory.
"Obviously, this was a great win. We played well from start to finish," Sun Coach Mike Thibault said of Charles’ achievement. "And having your centre get a triple-double was awesome."
September 4 vs. Washington Mystics
On September 4 at Verizon Center, Charles registered one of her best double-doubles of the season to spearhead Connecticut to their biggest victory over the Washington Mystics, 79-48. Charles tallied a game-best 24 points and pulled
down 15 rebounds in more than 24 minutes of action.
The All-Star rookie had a nearly flawless start to the Sun, scoring the first four points of the game and reaching her double-double before halftime. Charles ended on a 10 for 14 shooting from the field and 4 for 4 from free throw
line.
Mystics coach Trudi Lacey praised the terrific performance of Connecticut’s star and said, “Tina Charles is certainly a forced to be reckoned with,'' ``She is a legitimate candidate for MVP. I would definitely say that.''
September 6 vs. Atlanta Dream
Connecticut’s centre tied her own double-double record, which she set last year en route to winning rookie of the year, in Connecticut’s 85-74 defeat to Atlanta Dream at Philips Arena. She had 17 points, shooting 8 for 19 from
the floor, and 12 rebounds in her 22nd double-double of the season.
September 11 vs. New York Liberty
At Mohegan Sun Arena, Charles set a WNBA recorded in the last game of the regular season with 23 double-doubles in a single season. The No.1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft owned the previous double-double record last season
at 22 last season.
Charles, the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at the University of Connecticut, posted a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds as Connecticut pulled out a 69-63 win over the New York Liberty.
