Tina Charles and Candice Dupree named WNBA’S Players of the Week – WNBA Update
Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles and Phoenix Mercury’s Candice Dupree have been named as the Player of the week in the Eastern and Western Conference respectively for the games played from Monday, June 13 through Sunday, June 19.
The contributions from both the players in the week are as under:
Tina Charles
Tina Charles has simply been unstoppable this season. The 22-year-old centre is averaging 20.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in the five games, she has played so far in the season. The centre is shooting at a superb 57.3
percent from the field and has notched three double-doubles so far.  In the week under the scanner, Tina took her game to a brand new level and marshalled her team to a 2-0 record.
Up against the Washington Mystics on June 16, Tina scored a game-high 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked one in nearly 35 minutes as Connecticut earned a hard-fought 79-71 win at the Verizon Center. She ended the night
with an 11-of-12 shooting from free throw line and also nailed two shots from the long range.
Three nights later, Charles scooped out a career-high 31 points and a game high 12 rebounds as Connecticut cruised past the Chicago Sky 83-68 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Charles made another accomplishment in the same win by tying
the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) record of 13 field goals in a game. She also recorded her second consecutive double-double of the week, shooting 13 for 21 from the field.
Candice Dupree
Candice Dupree has received this award for the fourth time in her career which is an honour in itself. The 26-year-old power forward paced the WNBA with 15.0 rebounds per game on the week. She is averaging 16.6 points and a staggering
12.6 rebounds in the first five games of the current season. In addition to all that, the power forward also notched her third straight double-double in the week - the longest such streak of her career. She is currently second in the West with two blocks per
game and is sixth in scoring.
In the first game of the week, Dupree racked up 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. However, her efforts went in vain as Phoenix Mercury failed to tackle the San Antonio Silver Stars on June 17 at US Airways Center.
Two nights later though, it was Dupree’s extraordinary performance that helped the Mercury seal a win over the Indiana Fever in an overtime extravaganza. She scored 21 points and set a franchise record with 18 rebounds as Mercury
choked Indiana down the stretch to seal a 93-89 in win.
Other Nominees
Also in the run to become best players of the week were Ebony Hoffman, Seimone Augustus, Sophia Young, Sue Bird, Ivory Latta, and Nicky Anosike.
