Tina Charles’ double-double helps Connecticut Sun rout Washington Mystics 79-48 – WNBA Recap
Tina Charles recorded her 21 double-double of the season with 24 points and 15 rebounds as Connecticut Sun humbled Washington Mystics 79-48 on Sunday night at the Verizon Center.
It was the second consecutive win for the Sun, who also snapped their four-game road losing streak. The Sun have already clinched a playoff spot are just half game behind Indiana Fever for the top position in the Eastern Conference.
On the other hand, it was the second straight loss for the slumping Mystics.
Charles, the 2010 WNBA rookie of the year, is now just one double-double short of the WNBA record she set last year. The 22-year-old centre also blocked two shots and finished with 10 for 14 from the field. Charles is one among
the leading candidates for the MVP contest and is averaging 17.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game in this season.
Mystics coach Trudi Lacey praised the brilliant performance of Charles and said, “Tina Charles is certainly a forced to be reckoned with.” “She is a legitimate candidate for MVP. I would definitely say that.”
Connecticut’s forward Asjha Jones also registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Danielle McCray posted 15 points on 5 for 9 shooting from the field, including 3 for 5 from three-point range.
Monique Currie came off the bench with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals to lead Washington. Crystal Langhorne scored 10 points while Kerri Gardin grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
Connecticut shot 40.8 percent (29 for 71) from the field and 100 percent (17 for 17) from free throw line while Mystics hot only 26.9 percent (18 for 67) from the floor and 71.4 percent (10 for 14) from the line. Washington committed
15 turnovers as compared to only 11 by the visiting team.
Connecticut scored the first 11 points of the opening quarter to take the initial lead and carried a 21-12 lead into the second. Sun again outscored Washington 21-12 in the second quarter and stretched their lead to 42-24, at halftime.
Leading by 18 points after first half, Connecticut limited the Mystics to 13 points in the third quarter and raced a 68-37 lead. They maintained their double-digit lead throughput the fourth quarter and romped to an emphatic win.
