Tina Charles leads as Connecticut Sun beat Minnesota Lynx 108-79 – WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Tina Charles stole the show at Mohegan Sun Arena with an outstanding double-double as Connecticut Sun cruised past the Minnesota Lynx 108-79 for their second consecutive victory. It was the largest margin of defeat that the league-leading Minnesota have endured so far in this season. The loss also saw their two-game winning streak halted.
Five Connecticut players reached double figures on the night. Charles ended with a game best 18 rebounds and 16 points. The 6 ft 4in centre shot 5 for 11 from the field and 6 for 7 from free throw line.
On the night, Renee Montgomery led the Sun with 17 points and seven assists. Connecticut’s guard Kara Lawson also came off the bench with 16 points and two rebounds. Lawson pinned 4 of 5 three-pointers in more than 20 minutes. Asjha Jones had 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks in the victory. Kelsey Griffin totalled 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Sun, who are second in the Eastern Conference with a 16-8 record.
Minnesota’s guard Lindsay Whalen scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed three rebounds. Whalen went 7 for 11 from the field and 5 for 5 from free throw line. Rebekkah Brunson added 11 points and five rebounds in the loss. Seimone Augustus also chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds for Lynx, who have lost just two of their previous 10 games.
Maya Moore, who is averaging 13.3 points per game so far in this season, returned to floor but she finished with just two points on a 1 for 7 shooting from the field.
Connecticut shot 52.8 percent (38 for 72) from the field and 71.9 percent (23 for 32) from free throw line. Minnesota, on the other hand, shot just 42.5 percent (31 for 73) from the floor and 61.9 percent (13 for 21) from the line.
Sun outscored the visiting team in the very first quarter of the game 29-14 and carried a 15-point lead into the second. Both teams scored 28 points each in the second quarter and Connecticut maintained their lead at halftime. Sun limited Minnesota to 20 points in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 80-62.
Leading by 18 points after three, Connecticut maintained their double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter to walk away with perhaps their most impressive victory so far in this season.
