Tina Charles shine as Connecticut Sun crush Tulsa Shock 90-79 – WNBA Recap
The Connecticut Sun displayed a brilliant team performance to crush Tulsa Shock with a 90-79 decision on Sunday night in front of 6,520 basketball fans at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Centre Tina Charles landed a team-high 19 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, and grabbed eight rebounds for Connecticut, who bounced back from a hard-fought 78-75 defeat to Chicago Sky on Thursday evening. Kara Lawson added
17 points and five rebounds, making all six of her free throws in the last 73 seconds of the fourth quarter, while Asjha Jones once again played well posting 16 points and four rebounds for Sun.
Tulsa guard Ivory Latta headed all players with 26 points, shooting 11-for-14 from the field, and grabbed four rebounds for the Shock, who have lost their four consecutive games of the current season with by double figures.
Liz Cambage, who was 4-for-4 from free throw line, ended with 16 points while forward Kayla Pedersen had 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the defeat. Pedersen scored 7-of-7 free throws.
First Quarter
Connecticut romped to a 6-0 run in the preliminary minutes of the first quarter and clinched an early advantage. Latta rallied hard for Shock and surged with a number of free throws however, Sun managed to lead the opening quarter
29-22.
Second Quarter
Lawson’s three-pointer and Walker’s lay-up early in the second quarter stretched Connecticut’s lead to 34-22. Tulsa however responded with six unanswered points to cut the deficit to 34-28 with 06:39 to go in the second.
Sun raised their intensity on the front court midway through the second to make it 44-36. With nearly two minutes in the break, Shock scored six free throws in the next 44 seconds to make it a four-point, 44-42, contest. Connecticut
however scored the last five points of the quarter, taking a 49-42 advantage at halftime.
Third Quarter
Leading by seven points at the end of first half, Sun lifted the momentum swiftly in the third quarter and ballooned their lead to 68-53 with 01:47 to go till the fourth. Tulsa retaliated a bit and scored five consecutive points
in the last one and half minute of the quarter to cut the margin to 68-58 as the game progressed into the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter
In the fourth quarter, Latta hit two consecutive three-pointers to cut Shock’s deficit to six points, 79-73, with 03:27 remaining. However, Sun did not let Tulsa get closer than eight points for rest of the period to walk away
with a victory.
