Tina Charles spearheads Connecticut Sun to a 79-71 victory over Washington Mystics – WNBA Recap
Tina Charles posted a game high 26 points and 10 rebounds as the Connecticut Sun outplayed the Washington Mystics 79-71 at Verizon Center on Thursday night.
Charles shot 11 for 17 from the field and 4 for 4 from free throw line in 35 minutes play. However, the 22-year-old was unable to tie her career high by just a single point. Sun coach Mike Thibault praised the impressive contribution
of the centre in the victory and said, "She looked really fresh when everybody else was tired late in the game," "I thought she was still playing at a very high level energy-wise."
Renee Montgomery also played well and contributed 23 points, five assists, and two rebounds in the win, netting 11 of her 12 free throws. The guard also pinned two three-pointers in the third consecutive victory for the Sun. Tan
White also came off the bench with 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals for Connecticut, who defeated the Tulsa Shock 90-79 on June 12.
Kelly Miller once again led Washington with 19 points and five assists. The 32-year-old also pinned four of the seven three-pointers, playing for 40 minutes. Matee Ajavon had 11 points and five rebounds while Nicky Anosike ended
up with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the defeat.
Sun opened the game with a 4-0 spurt early and took the initial lead. Mystics missed at least ten opportunities to score, including three three-pointers, and also committed five turnovers in the first 12 minutes of the game. This
allowed the Sun to carry a 23-11 lead into the second quarter.
Connecticut stretched their lead to 31-14 early in the second quarter but Washington fought back and cut the deficit to six points, 31-37, with 02:26 remaining in the first half. Mystics continued to retaliate and with 49 ticks
left in the second, Ajavon made a three point play to make it a three contest, 40-37. However, Montgomery pinned a three right at the buzzer to make it 43-37 for Connecticut at halftime.
Washington outscored the Sun 20-17 in the third quarter to make it 60-57 going into the final stanza. The Mystics continued to eat on the Sun lead and Anosike's jumper midway through the frame put them ahead by one, 65-64 - their
first lead of the game. However, Sun reeled off a 15-6 burst in the passage that followed to walk away with their first road win during this season.
