I left some uncovered melon slices on my kitchen table, and when I came back there were several tiny flies on it. Should I dispose of the food immediately?

  1. yes

  2. Read this, then decide: Flies taste with their feet. They light on everything they want to taste. They were outside before you saw them in the kitchen. When they find something they want to eat, first they vomit on it to start digesting and liquifying the food so they can siphon it into their mouth. Some of what they ate before- whatever that was innoculated your melon. You can wash it if you want to, or cut off where you think they were. You might get lucky or you might get sick. It's up to you.

  3. No, just scrape or cut away a thin layer of melon.

Those flies you described sound like that tiny ones that get into an open vinegar bottle.  Harmless.

The regular flies can spread disease so if you have found them sitting there for a long time cut a thicker part off all around the melon, rinse and it is ok.
