As we toured county Kerry in Ireland, we noticed that windows were in-set and tilted, rather than straight up and down. Why? Thanks.

  1. Dormer houses are quite popular in Ireland and so most dormer houses have sky light windows, which I think is what you just described!

  2. just depends what make and type of window frames were fitted ... the ones that tilt inwards at the top usually have two hinges, one at the bottom so that you can have a gap at the top, and another on the side so that you can open the window fully from the side (especially useful when you want to clean the windows) ... you change between the two hinges by rotating the position of the handle ... most people use the top gap setting for general ventilation and only use the full open setting for cleaning ... this type of window frame is particularly popular as you don't need to hire anyone to clean your upstairs windows, it's easy to do it yourself
