Okay so i was out to eat with a big group of people for a birthday party... The check comes, everyone pitches in the money for their dinner and we all share the cost of the birthday boys money... Here's the issue, when we try to figure out the tip we get into an argument about what the proper way to do it is---- Do you calculate the tip with or without tax included?

  1. I believe it is without, but everyone should leave thier own tip and avoid a huge problem.

  2. Whatever your tax is double it and there's your tip.

  3. 20dollars for every 100 dollars you spend....20 % with tax is ok..then if you go back to that restaurant, most likely the server will remember you and give you even greater service.. just remember to go to that servers section.

  4. ACTUALLY WE DON'T COUNT THE TAXES WE JUST GIVE

  5. with tax included, if applicable.  Standard Tipping percentages are 15% unless you feel that you service was exemplary, then you tip more accordingly!  Trust me on this one!  I worked at cracker barrel for a year and a half!  I know my ****!  haha Plus I put up with lots of headaches over people who WOULDN'T tip at all!

  6. tipping is generally 20% of the meal ticket. but if you had a large group and you made your server work real hard it's always nice to leave a little extra something. if she wasn't a real good server then you can leave a little less. tipping is all subjective.

  7. yeah!!!!! We all are taxed ......

So what , Just add the Tax.

  8. I usually calculate tip without the tax.

  9. yes it is your expenditure

  10. I always figure that you should just double the tax as a good guide as to the propper amount to tip

  11. with tax

  12. Tip should be twice the tax amount.

  13. well, you decide how much the tip should be based on the tax, but you don't calculate that individually.

then you split the tip evenly between all of you. the service was provided to you equally. it is  not like your order is 5 dollars more so i would give a 5 dollar worth of service extra for you!

  14. Always tip.  The going rate is 18% in the United States.  Hear that Europeans?!?!  18%!!!!  At least.  Waiters are taxed on that money, it's part of their salary.  They only get like $2.00 per hour in most places.  Always, always tip.  Many places have rules that gratuityt will be included for parties of 6 or more in the check.  That gratuity is 15% which was fine fifteen or twenty years ago.  Inflation, man.  Always at least 18%.  I do 20% minimum up to 25%.  I'm a waiter, so I know these people get screwed alot.  Especially by Europeans, Old People, Southerners, Asians, and people too poor and trashy to be eating out in the first place.  This is a service based economy in a America, pay for the service.

Sorry for the rant, but it's necessary.  Tell your friends.  18% at least.

  15. Quick way to do it is to double the tax.  That gives you about 15%

I go for the total - 10% for bad/ok service

                                  15% for medium serivice

                                  18% for good service

                                  20% for outstanding service

I'm surprised with or without tax even comes up.  15%  of 7%

That's not enough to even stress about

  16. Figure the tip based on the cost of the dinner, not including the tax. Depends what your tax rate is, you may be able to look at the check and quickly determine an approximate amount. For instance, if your tax rate is between 7 and 8 per cent, you'll be very close to the standard 15%. Here our rate is higher than that so we sometimes scale it back a little. However, did the restaurant staff go out of their way to accommodate your requests? Perhaps bring a dessert for the birthday boy? Then a larger amount may be warranted.

On another note, most restaurants automatically add 15 to 18% to bills for groups over 6. If you had that added already, then you don't need to add anything further.

  17. Without. Tax is not a service the waitperson provided! But I always over tip anyways, so who cares.

  18. with the tax included. the tip should be at least 20% since you had a large group.

  19. with, we are all taxed.

  20. I always tip between 15% and 20% based on good service and the price of the meal and drinks (not taxed yet) if any. You have to be careful though as there are some restaurants that automatically take out 15% gratuity for large parties so they don't get stiffed for the service (pay attetion to your check as some places don't even tell you that). Crappy service you leave a penny (I know it sounds cheap but it is sending a message to the server). Happy dining!

  21. The best way to tip someone is to double the tax.
