ok, lets go one further............ gratuities, added to the bill, do you agree with this or not, what i mean is, you get your bill and added to it is a certain % for a tip, you don't have a choice of tipping or not, because its already added, what do you think about that

  1. if large party over 10, I agree. many people do not tip properly and monopolize servers and then they make lss money because they have less customers.  if service is excellent, i add more, and be sure to telll mgr.,  if service bad, i ask to speak to mgr and explain how i feel this is wrong and no additional tip will be provided. many times when this occur the mgr takes off

  2. its a c**p idea,, it should be up to you how much and when you tip

  3. I really hate places that automatically add the tip in and make a mental note of it for future visits (if ever again).  If the service and food were exceptional, I'd have no problem paying it (I probably still wouldn't go back though, I hate being forced to pay their stated amount).  If the service and food was horrible, I'd have a chat with the supervisor or manager about it.  If they refuse to make things right I'd tell them I'll never darken their doors again and will be telling family and friends about their establishment.

What I don't understand is why everyone feels the need to tip waiters/waitresses for their service despite the food quality. First off, in many chain restaurants all the employees get a share of the tip, even the cooks.  If your food is horrible but the service is good, the cook still gets a portion you meant for the server only.  If you don't leave a tip the server still has to add the missing tip money out of her tip share.

(Knowing this I'll leave about 10%  for effort on her part and will let her know the meal was not great.  If service and food are both horrible, I leave nothing.  If I ever receive excellent service/food then maybe 15 %, I have yet to pay this amount).

Second,  I shouldn't have to pay the restaurant servers wages, that should be up to the owners/management.  I hate the fact that as soon as you walk in your expected to tip despite the high prices (with little portions), bad/fair service and fair/poor food quality .    These servers know full well that this is a low paying job before starting this job and they rely on tips to supplement the rest.  Why even bother with this job then, get another job  that pays what you are worth and don't expect me to make or break your bottom line ($).

  4. I think it's wrong. I mean I think you should be able to choose who you tip and who you don't. I mean you don't want to give money to a crappy server. What my dad does is he lays $20 on the table and everytime he has to ask the waitress for something (refills, straws, napskins... etc) he deducts a dollar or two depending.. I think it's a pretty effective way to get good service.

  5. i agree why does it need to be added? I do usually tip accordingly because they only make $3 an hour which will not pay the bills.

I went to a four star restaurant with 8 of my close female freinds. the service was good and the tab was around $500. the waiter had the nerve to write in a 18 percent tip in front of my face. he said "I wrote in a tip amount for your convience." my response was "who the F*** asked you to wrtie in the tip? with excellent service i usually tip 40 percent but you only want 18."  that guy was pissed! but my opinion is that if the service is great i will leave good tip or a crappy one if service was crappy. I once left a 7 cent tip on a $149.93 tab.

  6. I think it's terrible to have a set ercentage for tipping.....

I think it shoud be upto the consumer as you may want to tip less (or even more !)

I think if they insist on this set tipping you shoud be able to opt out of it....

  7. of course you have an option of paying the gratuity they add, this is for your convinience, (seperate checks, children, the time it takes to set up a large table) but there is no law in anypart of the world that obligates you to pay this. if you feel that you have been cheated by bad service simply talk to a manager and let him know, trust me he will agree with you. and if the service you recieved was better than you expected........ tip more!!!!!. remember this is the First World and we live in the United States of America being 20% or more for good service. and 10-15% for bad service.

    Take care of your servers.....

remember they are servers not SERVENTS!!!

  8. People who do not agree with gratting a ticket need to work as a server for a day. Most servers only make $2.13 an hour. You do everything for your guests and then you get a bad tip. You can work hard for hours and make no money. Also you can work and make a lot of money. The grat ensures that the server will take care of you. Not to punish you. Most people tip decent but it seems like when 5 or more people get together the tip less than when it it just two of them. Most restaurants now have the servers tip a percentage of their sales. We tip 3%. So if you come in and spend $100 and dont leave a tip, I still have to pay $3.00 out for the bartender, busser, and expo.

  9. you really don't believe in tipping?  If the service is bad or slow I will not tip.  But some people who are paid less than minimum wage, rely on those tips.  Most servers are paid lower because the management know that tips will make it up for them.

You are right in a way. I don't agree with the tip being added on for you. It should be up to you how much you want to tip.

but never tipping? I don't agree with you on that.

I work 3 jobs and I don't get tips either.  But I will not begrudge someone else.

    I don't understand you.

    good luck
