Tipping mandatory...?

Is tipping mandatory in america at restaurant where servers make 2.83/hr? I'm not saying it has to be 18% but it is a fact that you should leave something. If you are not going to tip then you should not eat at these restaurants. Bad service is one thing but you have to really figure out who makes the mistake. If you go out to eat on a Friday night and don't get seated for a while and it takes sometime for your food to come out, don't have an attitude toward your server, it is your fault you wanted to eat the same time as everyone else? Am i wrong? What do you think?

  1. It’s almost never the server’s fault when the food doesn’t come out fast. It could be a mistake in the kitchen. The kitchen could have made a mistake, anything.

You should tip 20% unless the server was rude.

If there’s a problem with the food, speak with the manager, don’t reduce your tip.

  2. Tipping is not mandatory. However you are right. If there is a long wait and it takes a while for the food to come out, that is not the server's fault. I will say though that I do not tip by percentage. I tip in accordance to service. If the server gave me good service, I will leave a good tip. I have left $20 before for a $50 meal. And I have also left $1 for a $50 meal also if/when I get really bad service.

"it takes a while for the food to come out, that is not the server's fault."

It CAN be if the SERVER FORGETS to PUT IN THE ORDER INTO THE COMPUTER.  My husband and I have had that happen 3 different times.  Two times it was appeitzers and another time it was a bisque.  All of those times, the servers ADMITTED forgetting to put in the orders.

Also, sometimes servers let the food sit in the window, so that would be their fault as well if no one brings the food out when it's ready.

I would say MOST of the time it's not the server's fault that the food takes a long time, but SOMETIMES it CAN BE!!

We still tipped the servers, just a lowered tip for the mistakes.  They all apologized at least.

  4. I  think ,  unless  the  server  messes  up  their  duties ,

( which  do  NOT  include  When you get   seated  or  if  the  kitchen  can  keep  up  with  rush  hour )

    You  OWE  the  server .

If   you  are  too  f*cking  cheap  to  pay  for  service ,

Go  to  the  drive  thru  places .

Seems  like  you  are  just   shopping  for  any  excuse  to  be  a  jerk ,

But  then  again ,   that   IS   what  a  jerk  is  !

  6. As a server I would like to thank you for all the great answers..Its nice to see people not blaming the server for something that is not their fault..Tipping is not mandatory but a good server deserves to be tipped. You have no idea how much stress a "good" server goes through to ensure you are getting the best service..I say everyone should have to serve for a bit to see how it feels...
