I just got into paintball a few months ago, and I got tired of using rental guns. I have a budget of around $350, and I was wondering if any of you guys could help me out. I narrowed my choices to the A5 and 98C, but I cant decide. I'll be playing woodsball and speedball, so im looking for a marker thats reliable, easy to maintain/fix and will last me a while. If there are any good upgrades please let me know

  1. iv never used an A5, but i know the 98c can take all sorts of punishment and still keep working, its a good gun.

  2. The A5 definately. Both are great guns but the A5 has way more upgrades than the 98 and you can make the A5 look like any real military gun which is really cool.

This website right here shows many of the different upgrades that are available for the A5.

But if I could make another suggestion then I would maybe suggest a Tippman X7. The A5 has many upgrades for it but since your budget is so high then maybe you would like to consider the X7. The price for the marker is about $330 & the upgrades are sold seperately but its well worth it. Im actually about to get myself one. There are thousands of different upgrades for this gun. Its the most costumizable gun out on the marker right now.

  3. Which will you be playing more, woodsball or speedball?

Tippmanns are excellent woodsball guns but people tend to dislike their qualities for speedball due to them being longer than most guns, a bit heavier, and wider.  Its not the gun that makes you win but the player and the "downsides" of a tippmann for speedball are not that bad.

The Tippmann A5 is the next step up from the 98C.  The A5 offers more upgrades and features as well as coming with a force fed hopper that can be fitting with a variety of different styles of hoppers from 30 round Tac Caps, low profile hopper, oversize 330-450 round hoppers, etc.  If you plan on using an E-Trigger for speedball use, APE E-Grips are the best you can buy and the most reliable.  In addition to the E-grip, the cyclone will have to be upgraded with Tech-T upgrades to keep up with the higher rates of fire and be much more reliable:

Usually the barrel is the first upgrade on any tippmann.  While it may be heavy, I recommend the Palmers Brass Barrel.  Its unique bore allows it to fit and accurately shoot differently sized paintballs without needing a barrel kit.

(Not longer than 16", Porting not needed on a tippmann, .690 bore)

For woodsball, an Apex tip can increase your range and has the settings 0=off, 4=flatline, 8=super flatline.  The barrel the apex tip comes on is junk due to its large bore size which does not fit most paintballs.

Accuracy comes from a good paintball and a good paintball to barrel match to where the paintball can be easily blown out of the barrel but not roll out or get stuck.

If you will be using Co2 and what HPA like performance without the huge cost of HPA, a palmers stabilizer will do it.  It will precisely regulate the the pressure of Co2 and prevent and liquid Co2 from getting into your gun.  A Palmers Stabilizer is the best you can buy:
