  1. Get something thats small and compact, typically a 4 cylinder. Like a Chevy Cobalt, Ford Focus

Orr if you really want to save gas try buying a Hybrid Car Chevy and Ford have a large option of Gas friendly to Gas free vehicles.

  2. Avoid manual transmissions. They only save gas at steady highway cruise speeds, not around town. why bother/ You could spill your coffee! You will also have a hard time selling the car if you ever trade it in. Who needs that c**p in normal driving in  this century? A stick shift car is also a pain in stop and go traffic. Mnay drivers just give up and only move when the other cars have moved far away and this disrupts the noral flow of traffic.

Most people have no skills using the stick and wind up buying a very expensive clutch replacement. Properly operated, a clutch lasts as long as the engine does!

So take a real expert along. This is the second most expensive item that you will ever buy. The Escort is highly regarded by the magazines. I rented a new, 2006 Cobalt four door for business trips in 2006. Was getting  38 M.P.G. on freeway but may have had a tailwind. (About 300 miles from Sacramento to Bakersfield in Cal). Good on mountain roads, smooth, quiet, solid.

I drive a Sonata. Large car but the floorboards under my feet jiggle a LOT, like a junker. Drove a Mid sized  Hyundai and shut it off even before leaving the dealers lot. The engine sounded like it was right in the front seat with me. Who needs that?

Daughter has a 2004 Prius. This is the most complex vehicle on the road anywhere. She gets about 50 M.p.G. city, Her son drives it and gets 25 to 28 M.p.g. city. I would never buy such a complicated vehicle. Fears of having to spend thousands on repairs - not for the faint of heart!

No reasonable magazine reviewer seriously considers the little bitty cars that are available.

The Toyota/Scion TC coups is well loved by the owners. Also the little Toyota Station wagon the Matrix.

Life is all about choices. Read Consumer reports, drive  a bunch of them. Never bring money or credit when visiting a dealer. Always take a few days and maybe even go back and drive another model.

  3. go with a smaller engine, and if you know how to drive a manual, go with that over an automatic.

  4. dont let those sly car salesmen con you into getting a car thats not right for you.

    get a German car.
