Also, if you don't fill up occasionally the fuel pump doesn't get properly lubricated and can fail. Occasionally your fuel gauge will also quit working if you fail to fill the tank occasionally.

You should NEVER let you gas tank get below 1/4.  Keep it as full as you want.

With the newer cars, the fuel pump is in the gasoline, the gasoline keeps it cool.  If the gasoline keeps being low, it overheats and eventually quits.  To replace fuel pumps the gas tank must be removed, and it is not cheap.

Also when a gas tank is low on fuel, moisture ( all gas tanks have water in the bottom ) and dirt get into the engine and are not good for the filter, injectors or engine.

MYSELF, I never let my tank get lower than 1/3, I usually fill it to 3/4.  I do not fill it full except when I have the extra money to do it.  I also have a locking gas cap.  With gasoline prices like they are, people often try to steal gas.
