Tips for Perming Fine, Thin Hair?

I am considering getting my hair permed (or have a wave). I had one a really long time ago, but didn't really know how to ask for what I wanted and ended up with a poodle-do. My hair is fine and very thin, wavy in the front but straight in the back. I don't want it super curly, more like loose spiral curls. Do you have tips for me... things to ask for or watch out for? Recommendations on what I should have done? Thanks!

Use large rods for a looser curl and then take good care of it after you get it.
