Question:

Tips for Playing Rock/Metal Guitar?

I've been playing around with guitar since I was 12. I'm really wanting to get serious now because I put it down for a few years, and I'm picking it back up now at 22. I know all the Major and Minor chords.

To play rock/metal music, should I dive into learning more CHORDS or should I start learning SCALES?

  1. Get into the scales so you can work on doing awesome guitar solos and even some great improvised solos.

  2. You should brush up on your skill (review the basic chords and all that). You can't get anywhere on guitar without knowing the basics. I suggest learning chords then go into scales (after you review of course), so you can hear (and see) how the chords are made up of notes.

  3. Both. Pick up a copy of Fretboard Logic. It will show you whatever you want to know about chords and scales. It's my opinion that you cant be a good lead player without being a good rhythm player. The songs aren't all solos.
